Overview:
Competitive, dynamic and innovative teams need people who are outgoing and yet organised, who have vision and an eye for detail, who are analytical and conceptual, who are dynamic and patient and who are forceful and yet sensitive to peopleā€™s feelings. In truth it is rare for one person to have such diametrically opposing qualities. So how do teams and organisations find an appropriate balance of individuals for success? The answer is BelbinĀ®. The BelbinĀ® team role construct is based on extensive research carried out over a period of almost ten years by Dr. R. Meredith Belbin and his colleagues at Henley Management College UK. Dr. Belbin found that for a team to be successful it should contain people with complementary qualities and behaviours. When individuals within a team understand their own and othersā€™ strengths and weaknesses, they are much better able to contribute to the overall operation of the team. Application of the BelbinĀ® team role theory in the work environment allows organisations to ā€œbalanceā€ team membership so that each individual can contribute most effectively to the success of the team. Where teams do not have this balance, they are likely to lack core attributes that are mandatory for success.
