How-to: Open an Excel workbook containing macros, without running the macros

 Aug 11, 2016

Have you ever locked yourself out of an Excel workbook because you wrote a macro that kicks in automatically and then closes the workbook? This way you will never have a chance to modify the workbook.

To overcome this situation you have 2 options;

  • Change your Excel macro security settings to high
  • Hold on Shift before you open the workbook

The first option may not always be attractive for users as they would need to go to Excel Options and make changes to the settings which will affect all workbooks.

The second option, however, is much easier and faster to use. Simply hold down the Shift key and then open the workbook. You need to make sure that you have kept Shift key down until the workbook is fully loaded.
