Claiming a spot in the top 10 of 25 leaders in the Fortune Top 50, VMware is showing off its leadership. Coming in 6^th just after great leaders such as Tesla, Facebook and Netflix, the virtualization software pioneer is charging into its cloud-computing future thanks to addition by subtraction.

Facing impossibly steep competition from Amazon’s AWS and Microsoft’s Azure, VMware unloaded its infrastructure-as-a-service business and worked on a portfolio that better caters to cloud-curious corporations, whatever the approach: public, private, or hybrid.

With over 500,000 customers globally that span all major industries, organizations are constantly looking for qualified staff to install, administer and support VMware solutions. VMware certified professionals are in high demand, therefore climbing the VMware certification ladder for both experienced and inexperienced IT professional will be very much valued.

VMware Certifications

There are 4 areas of certifications you can explore: VMware Cloud Management and Automation (CMA) Certifications, VMware Data Center Virtualization (DCV) Certifications, VMware Desktop and Mobility (DTM) Certifications and, of course, VMware Network Virtualization (NV) Certifications.

You can get your VMware credentials as an Associate (VCA), Professional (VCP), Advanced Professional (VCAP), VMware Certified Implementation Expert (VCIX) or Design Expert (VCDX). To get an Associate Certification requires passing a single exam. Candidates for Professional and Advanced Professional certifications must either take a training course or earn a prerequisite certification and pass one or two exams. To obtain a VCIX, candidates must earn two VCAP credentials. Achieving a VCDX6 requires the candidate to first obtain multiple prerequisite certificates, then create a production-ready VMware solution and defend it in front of a panel.

How to prepare yourself for the exams

Careers

Most of the jobs that are associated with VMware certifications are System Administrator roles, which tend to focus on server provisioning, and operation and maintenance of systems hardware, software and related infrastructure. A big part of their job will be system monitoring, system and application log reviews, tuning and optimization, patching and upgrading, server backups and restoration, and troubleshooting.

System Engineers are also very common, this role generally applies higher level business or technical principles to issues to determine the best solution. System Engineers often performs systems analysis, evaluation, design and integration, and consults with team members and customers from the implementation planning and design phase through testing.
