Configuring user profiles in SharePoint 2016

 Dec 09, 2016

SharePoint 2016 user profiles synchronisation service provides a central location for configuring and managing the core elements of personalisation settings. It consists of:

User profiles: stores the detailed user information.

Profile synchronisation service: synchronises user profile information with external directory services such as active directory domain services.

Audience: enables you to target content to a specific set of user membership.

My site host: Stores of the user personal sites aka my sites.

My sites: user personal sites.

In order to configure the user profile service application:

  1. Create a service account for the service application
  2. Grant the farm admin account replicating directory changes permission
  3. Register the service account as a managed account
  4. Start the user profile service instance
  5. Create the user profile service instance

Once the user profile synchronisation service is provisioned properly, you need to configure the active directory import. There are two import modes:

Active directory import: This method enables you to import user information from AD DS into SharePoint user profile properties.

External identity manager synchronisation: SharePoint Server 2013 was bundled with the Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) Sync service to support complex user profile synchronisation scenarios with different identity providers.
