Do you need your Excel comments to stand out? Did you know that it’s possible to change the colour of Excel comments as well as the shape of the comment? Follow these simple steps to add a splash of creativity to your Excel files.

Customise your Quick Access Toolbar (QAT)

  1. In Excel 2007, open ‘Excel Options’ and go to ‘Customise.’
    In Excel 2010/2013, open ‘Excel Options’ and go to ‘Customise QAT.’
  2. In the ‘Choose Commands’ drop-down menu, select ‘All Commands.’
  3. Find the ‘Change Shape’ command in the left hand pane and then click the ‘Add’ button to add it to the QAT. A shapes button will now appear in your QAT.

Format Excel comments

  1. In your worksheet, right click on the cell where you want to add a comment.
  2. Click on ‘Insert Comment’ and enter the comment.
  3. To change the shape, click on the border of the comment and click on the ‘Change Shape’ that you previously added to the QAT. A drop-down menu of shapes will appear and select a shape.
  4. To change colours and fonts, right click on your comment and select ‘Format Comment.’ A dialog box will appear where you can make those formatting changes.
