Project management was not popular until the 19th century. Organisations started to apply formal project management principles and tools in the mid-1950s to complex projects.
Project Management is a growing profession in every country all over the world. As the profession is growing, so does the project managers salaries. But those salaries vary extremely around the world. The highest project manager’s average salary was recorded in Switzerland with more than $213,000AUD. The lowest average salary was recorded in Poland with $45,000AUD.
Countries with top salaries for Project Management Practitioners
The 10 countries with the highest average annual salaries for project practitioners according to the 2013 PMI Project Management Salary Survey – Eight Edition published in December 2013 are:
1. Australia
While technology experience is preferred, there aren't enough experienced IT project practitioners to fill the rapidly goriwng demand. Instead, Australian organisations place more significant on unversally adaptable skills such as communication
2. Switzerland
As the economy slows down in Switzerland, the market is becoming saturated with many highly skilled and experienced project managers due to layoffs.
3. US
Global projects are more prevalent than ever. And more mature and well-established project management practices — such as risk management, requirements management and stakeholder management — are needed when working together with team members in markets with less-developed processes.
4. Netherlands
The recent European economic crisis has had a lingering effect on the Netherlands. For public and private projects, there has been a belt-tightening of budgets. As a result, stakeholder management and project communication are the most valued skills.
5. Germany
Credentials and certifications are required in most of the job offerings, but long-time experience in project management can make up for a lack of certification.
6. Canada
As Canada emerges from the grips of economic uncertainty, the demand for excellent project managers is high. Businesses need to ensure the projects they engage are successful, and the skilled knowledge of project professionals can make that happen.
7. New Zealand
New Zealand had been experiencing ongoing fiscal restraint as a result of the world financial crisis. But the Canterbury earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, the most costly natural disasters for insurers worldwide since 1950, have brought an estimated US$40 billion rebuild that's still stimulating growth.
8. Belgium
The presence of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Council of Europe institutions in Brussels has attracted a large number of world and European headquarters in the region. As a result, there is demand for IT project managers.
9. Sweden
More and more, companies see project management as a core competency that's too risky and costly to outsource. However, the public sector has far too few educated project managers, and it often uses senior project management consultants for projects.
10. United Kingdom
Government departments realise they don't have the depth of knowledge internally to run some of their activities. They're looking for project practitioners with change management prowess and the skills to negotiate with suppliers and vendors.
